When selecting the type of water cooling equipment for a system, cold water temperature is an important factor to consider. Each system has a minimum cold water temperature at summer design conditions, which can vary significantly depending on the type of equipment.

The minimum cold water temperatures for the different types of cooling equipment in UK applications are as follows:

  • Chillers – no minimum cold water temperature
  • Cooling Towers – 23 oC
  • Adiabatic Coolers – 26 oC
  • Dry Coolers – 33-35 oC

It’s important to note that for cooling towers and adiabatic coolers, the wet bulb temperature is more important than the dry bulb temperature. A typical relationship between dry bulb temperature and wet bulb temperature in the UK is assumed in the graph below.

When selecting the type of water-cooling equipment, it’s important to consider the cooling load and the capital cost of each system. These factors, along with the minimum cold-water temperature, will help determine the best cooling solution for a specific application.
