Evaporative cooling towers are the most energy efficient means of cooling water. Hot process water or condenser water from a chiller enters the distribution system at the top of the cooling tower and falls by gravity in counter-flow to the air being drawn or forced through the cooling tower by the fan. As the air passes the water a small proportion is evaporated cooling the remaining water which is collected in the cooling tower sump. The cooled water is then returned to the process or chiller.

The difference between the required cold water temperature and the wet bulb temperature (called the approach temperature), is significant in determining the size of the tower. The smaller the approach the larger the required heat exchange surface. The approach temperature must be at least 3-4 °C.

The heat exchange surface known as packing provides close contact between the air and water in open towers. High efficiency film packings provide a large surface area over which the cooling water is spread increasing the evaporative cooling effect. Splash packings can be selected for applications where the water quality is poor.

The fluid to be cooled (usually water) flows through the water passages of the stainless steel plate heat exchanger without coming into direct contact with the external air, preventing dirt or pollution from entering the primary water circuit. The heat is transmitted from the fluid through the wall of the heat exchanger plates to the cooling water from the tower, which is being continuously circulated through the heat exchanger.

The fan at the top of the tower draws air through the tower in counter-flow to the water, thereby evaporating a small amount of the re-circulating secondary circuit water. The evaporative process causes cooling of the remaining water and the heat is released to atmosphere,. The remaining water is re-circulated by the spray water pump from the basin to the spray nozzles. A small quantity of heat is transmitted by sensible heat transfer to the external air, in a similar manner to an air cooler.

The refrigerant gas is circulated through the coil whilst the secondary circuit water is sprayed over the external surfaces of the tubes. At the same time, the fan induces airflow through the coil evaporating a small part of water. The process of evaporation causes heat to be extracted from the gas through the wall of the coil tube. This evaporation is owed to the heat obtained from the gas in the heat exchanger, thereby cooling and condensing the gas itself.

EWK evaporative condensers feature high performance coils and corrosion resistant FRP casings. The aerodynamic design of the condenser top casings ensures low energy consumption. The tower design and construction facilitate easy maintenance.

The fluid to be cooled (usually water or glycol water) flows through the tubes of the coil without coming into direct contact with the external air, preventing dirt or pollution from entering the primary water circuit. The heat – from the fluid is conducted through the tube walls to the water, which is sprayed over the coil.

The fan at the base of the tower forces air in counterflow to the water, causing a small proportion of the spray water to be evaporated. The evaporative process cools the remaining water causing heat from the coil surface to be transferred from the spray water to the atmospheric air passing through the tower. The remaining water is re-circulated by the spray water pump from the basin to the spray nozzles. (Secondary circuits). A small quantity of heat is also transmitted by sensible heat exchange to the atmospheric air in a similar manner to an air cooler.

Cooling towers bring a cold and dry air mass in counter-flow to hot water that comes from an industrial or air conditioning process. Part of this water evaporates, cooling the rest. The necessary heat for this is approx.597 Kcal/liter. The cold water produced is returned into the process to re-initiate the cycle. The equipment with this evaporative refrigeration principle are very important for energy efficiency in industrial processes.

The difference between the required cold water temperature and the wet bulb temperature (called cooling limit distance), is significant to determine the size of the tower. The smaller the cooling distance is, the bigger the interchanging surface is needed. The limit distance must be of at least 3-4º C.

In open cooling towers there is a close contact water-air, which is bigger thanks to the fill packings, that provide a big surface of exchange, improving performance and evaporation. There are different kinds of fill packing for different water quality.
